A person doesn’t have to be a fashion historian to understand the popularity of corsets. This article of clothing was a reaction to a fitness fad that started in the early 1900s called waist cinching. It was thought that garments, such as a corset worn tightly, would train a woman’s midsection and waistline to be smaller. The concept of compression was and still is beneficial, but, unfortunately, outside of how a woman looked wearing one of these cinching corsets, there wasn’t much to speak of in terms of long-term results.
